My latest discovery is the PrettySimpleMusic channel with some wonderful gospel lessons. Here’s an example where the instructor plays through all the 2-5-1 progressions in major and minor keys with some nice voicings. Nothing special there perhaps, but the soulful playing makes this video an essential watch and no doubt this is a very good practice routine.
Excellent breakdown of the harmony and theory of the wonderful and challenging tune Giant Steps by John Coltrane. The chord progression is widely used and is known as the “Coltrane Changes”. A must know progression and this video provides an excellent explanation of the theory and how to voice the chords. A must watch for intermediate and advanced players.
Another killer lesson from Jake, this time demonstrating some advanced chord voicings. Definitely at the top of my practice list for the coming weeks. Beautiful playing as always.
A song that’s always fascinated me due to the slow pace of the chords and the fantastic 7sus4 chord voicings played by Herbie Hancock. It’s great fun to solo over and this lesson will give you a few creative ideas.
Superb video from the excellent Jake Lizzio about using modulations or key changes in your compositions. Fantastic presentation as always and some very interesting examples of some common modulations.
Corey is such a lovely gentleman and the most requisite and tasteful player. Here he presents for you 3 wonderful chords that will add a new sound to your playing.
Essential lesson for keyboard players or all levels from MangoldProject (I don’t know his name). The 2-5-1 progression is one of the most commonly used chord progressions in jazz and pop and here is a breakdown of the many ways you can play and voice the chords.
I know nearly all of these voicings and use them all the time so I highly recommend watching and learning the techniques demonstrated in this video.
So What is an essential Miles Davis tune to know with a fabulous Bill Evans minor 7 chord voicing. It’s an example of a modal tune which is a lot of tun and relatively easy to solo over due to the slow pace of the chords. The wonderful Aimee Noite gives you some great pointers about ideas for playing a great improvisation.
My mission is to share the knowledge I’ve learned over 40 years of playing piano, synth and keys. I’ve created my Piano Inspiration Series with the goal of injecting new creative ideas to your playing, improving your technique and music theory knowledge and broadening your repertoire.
The Piano Inspiration Series consists of 19 lessons totaling 6 hours of content. The course is available on the following platforms.
Another video I’m working on myself, it goes from very basic concepts to quite advanced in a short time, so some great tips here for everything. Some beautiful playing and the soothing voice of the instructor make it worth the watch!
